High School Cliques

This evening’s episode of The Fashion Show was about high school cliques. So I bet you’re asking: What happened to Angel?  Why couldn’t she pull through in this challenge?

Well, I was sick for one (could you tell?). There was no way of getting better with the 4 hours of sleep we were getting every night, and we only had 2 hours the night before this particular challenge. I was also losing inspiration fast - something that started to happen in the last “real woman” challenge.

Being uninspired is like death for me and the fatigue of working in a factory atmosphere under fluorescent lights was starting to set in. I was hoping that the challenges would become more inspiring so I could really show people what I was capable of as a designer. Unfortunately, a lot of my inspiration comes from developing innovative materials — and there was no time for that!

So this week’s challenge was to design a look inspired by a high school clique. Mine was B-Girl. A what?!  Ha, well, thank you for all those who sympathized and told me they didn’t know what a B-Girl was either.  I knew what B-Boys looked like, but B-Girls have a less defined look so it was hard to visualize exactly what a typical one would look like. Someone just sent me this pic of a real b-girl crew, Beat Freaks, and apparently I wasn’t that far off.

bgirl

B-Girl to me is a more specific sub-culture (80’s, break-dancing, DayGlo colors) than the much larger hip hop genre the judges chose to focus on. It is a subtle, but very important, distinction that a lot of you viewers picked up on. (Thank you!) Had I been given hip-hop as a clique to focus on, you can bet my design would have been very different.

More of my thoughts on the challenge can be read here on my Bravo blog. It was written the day after filming (many months ago) and focuses on the importance of research in my design process.

As for the things that inspire me: traveling to experience different cultures, thinking about future lifestyles, new technology, and developing innovative materials. I also work directly with textile mills to create the latest fabrics on the market and experiment with different embroidery, pleating, printing, and dyeing techniques.

Innovation and creativity requires time and patience during the design process. Twelve hours is very little time to show the potential of what a designer can do. I hope the show at least showed a sliver of what I am capable of in the real world.

Thank you all for watching me these past five weeks! I am grateful that Bravo believed in me as a designer and provided a stage for me to show you my work. I learned a lot by being part of the show, and it truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I will continue to design for my own collection and hope you will continue to follow me here on my site!

Matt Bergman Says:

Angel,

Ah you have more important things to do anyway. Like get a Doctorate. Kelly should be ashamed for that rant she presented to the world. I can’t watch the show anymore after they way they discussed you. It’s so fake and uninspiring.

Carlos Says:

It really was dissapointing to see you leave, as you were one of my favorite designers. Luckily I and im sure many others found out about you and your site, and I cant wait to see what new innovations youll bring to the Fashion World! =)

Anthony Lee Says:

I completely understand where you were coming from with the not knowing what a B-Girl was thing, because.. ugh! There’s not even a clear definition of what one is for instance! You were one of my favorites on the show along with JP and Merlin, and I’m hoping you will do well without the show. I think you deserve the 125k much more than whoever will win, since you bring true innovation to the fashion world!

Dave Says:

There is this point where, to make compelling and addictive television, they need to descend into tasteless banter. I was surprised that Isaac went there, but he needs to make this show a hit to continue another season. This is no Project Runway. Whether it is renewed for another season will be surprising. I am familiar with your work and don’t think that challenges like the one for which you were eliminated reflect your innovative design sense. Kelly was particularly full of s**t, frankly. She felt “insulted”, yet had no restraint in her abilities to insult for attention and profit.

Helly Says:

I like to think that regardless of how uninspired or sick you were, if you had known more about what a b-girl was, things would have been different. Good job anyway, and keep up the good work :D

Kasey Says:

Angel, you are absolutely fabulous. I’m extremely inspired by your work as a designer (that double shirt dress? GENIUS!) and I loved what you were able to accomplish on the show. You are a phenomenal designer and I can only wish that I could be as inventive and amazing liike you are. Designers like you are the people that I want to be like when I actually am able to break out into the fashion world.

You were my favorite along with James Paul. You two were just awesome! I think that it is absolutely insulting how Kelly and Issac attacked you about not knowinig about Hip Hop, and I agree. Lots of people, even if they watch tv, don’t necessarily watch channels that have hip hop. I actually live in Indiana now, and I can say that honestly half of my friends could watch that stuff, but opt out of doing so because it just isn’t their cup of tea.

I look forward to seeing your stuff in the future. Hopefully, I’ll eventually be able to make enough money to be able to afford it. Haha!

I’d love to talk to you sometime, though I’m sure that your schedule probably doesn’t allow you muhc time to communicate. You’re just so amazing and I think it would be really cool to talk with you.

Good luck! Can’t wait to see more!

Sincerely,
Kasey

Oksana Komarova Says:

Angel, wish I was there to give you a hug! Keep up your momentum and let’s see more of your fun fabulous original work.

xx
OK

Dat Says:

Normally I don’t go around commenting on people’s blogs - but this particular episode and esp. Kelly just annoyed me way too much.

Your work was great. And I don’t know where they got off attacking/”educating” you on your hip hop knowledge. B-girl doesn’t equal hip-hop!
Ugh.

Good work!
That’s all.

Mailee Says:

Angel, you and James Paul were my favorite designers from the start! Your talk about digital inks really intrigued me, because I’m actually just getting into fashion design and that’s the sort of thing I really want to break into.

I’m sure you’re sick of hearing it by now, but your elimination was complete BS. I fit into MTV’s demographic pretty perfectly, and watching it makes me physically ill. To persecute you for your ignorance was not only ridiculous but also insulting. And the entire premise was kind of offensive, reinforcing high school stereotypes.

Furthermore, you were 100% correct in assuming that a B-Girl is a more niche culture than hip hop. You actually had more of a grasp of that concept than LeMiz and Kelly did. Your double shirt dress design clearly shows innovation and design courage, and I’m very sad I don’t get to see more of you on the show. But hey! You’re a designer, so I still get to see your amazing work!

I wish I’d have known about your texting challenge! I definitely would have participated. :) Unfortunately I’m neither in NYC nor do I watch this show in real time, so I guess it wouldn’t have amounted to a whole lot anyway! :P

Well, good luck in your endeavours! I hope one day I’ll be able to meet you. Your work is very inspiring to me. :)

R Says:

Your elimination bothers me a lot. You’ve done fantastic work on the show - I loved the siamese twin shirt dress! I had no clue what they meant by b-girl and started googling images. Ironically one hit that came up was a u-tube video and the girl was wearing slacks with one leg shorter than the other. I thought the judges were overly harsh. Good luck to you - I’m sure you’ll be wildly successful!

Es Says:

Angel,
I believe that you are very talented. Please keep up the good work and I hope to see more of your designs. Frankly, I don’t know what a b-girl is either. The judges didn’t tell you anything before and they found it insulting? I thought the challenge was to make an outfit that was inspired by that particular high school clique but was not necessarily for someone who was actually wearing it.
But anyway, I was sad to see you go. You are amazing.

John Says:

Angel–to reiterate most of the posts here, the judges were unfairly mean and petty. Fern Mallis and Issac Mizrahi claiming they know what a B-girl is laughable. Feigning knowledge of that particular subculture from two middle aged New York Jews is the insulting thing, not your garment. I really wanted to smack them. Hard. Furthermore, I doubt that Kelly Rowland knows what one is either. I hope you send them that picture of the girls in the satin jackets to show that you not only weren’t far off, but pretty much right on the mark. Why Kelly Rowland is a co-host of this show is very questionable in the first place. Very. Thanks for the previous posts for reminding me about your shirtdress — that was a truly innovative and beautiful piece of fashion. It really shows what a talented and intellectual designer you are. I wish you the best for your bright future in the industry.

Destinee Cortez Says:

Angel,
I finally watched the episode where they dismissed you I’ll be honest when I say I have lost all of what little respect I ever had for Kelly Rowland. You were polite and even apologized for being “insulting” to the hip hop culture (of which you really did not insult) and she just clawed and ripped at you in an attitude that was inappropriate. I believe the way she reacted and even stated, “Well, Let me educate you,” in an arrogant way, was what really insulted the hip hop culture since she is a so-called product of it. All of the judge’s harsh criticisms and reactions to your little knowledge of “B-girl” was ridiculous and unnecessary and I was shocked at their childish behavior. Regardless you stood up there, absorbed it in a courteous fashion, apologized, and even said you would take what they had to say with you in the future. You were my hero and I admired you for being such a respectable person (even though they did not deserve it), and for not leveling yourself down to the egotistical attitude Kelly and Isaac displayed.
I love the fashion on your website and I believe you are inspiring in the way you become inspired.

Sincerely,
Destinee Cortez

P.S… The Fashion Show fails and will never be Project Runway

The Fashion Show Recap: Bravo, Bravo TV! « 13 Going on 47 Says:

[...] I really liked the “High School Cliques” episode (week 6) when all the designers had to pick a personality type of a girl at school (skater girl, “B-girl,” mean girl, etc.) and create something to reflect it. I cringed when Angel was excoriated for not knowing what a “B-girl” was or what she would wear. I didn’t know, either! Angel talks about the experience on her blog. [...]
